Challenges

The project involved redesigning an existing platform, presenting several specific challenges. Considering the initial state of the project, numerous adjustments had to be made to the workflow and overall structure.

Dashboard Consistency

As you will see shortly, the main page of both profiles lacked any structure; it simply displayed information without any hierarchy or order. The major challenge was to find a balance and implement it consistently for the user.

Excessive use of oversized tables.

The tables used in some cases didn't make much sense, with instances of tables having 50 rows where only 3 were utilized. Other tables lacked a color code or structure, making them unreadable for the user.

The presence of two user roles.

With the existence of both an organizing user and a parent user, it was crucial to maintain consistency in the documentation and designs, along with a proper order to ensure that both flows seamlessly connect as intended.

Redesign

The first step was to understand the project, its flows, objectives, and what the client was seeking. Following this, various tests were conducted, references were sought, and wireframes were gradually crafted, leading to the final design phase.

Users

Feis had two distinct users, representing two extremes of the tool: the organizer, responsible for creating events and uploading results, and the parent, who registers their children or themselves for competitions. At one point, there was a discussion about adding a "Dancer" role that could register independently, but it was postponed for a future stage.
Robert, a 35-year-old dance academy owner in Vancouver, organizes competitions every 3 months to showcase his students' progress over the 15 years he has been teaching Irish dance. He needs a simple solution that helps him optimize his time.

Wade and Kristin have a daughter, Joana, who is a student of Robert and is ready for her first competition. Wade and Kristin are looking for an easy way to register their daughter for the competition, as they are not very tech-savvy and find it challenging.

Branding

The client didn't want to change their branding, so we kept everything the same in that aspect. We used both the green and yellow colors provided by the client. Only a couple of variations in tones were made to achieve a more pleasing result.

Design

Evolving from chaos to order, delivering a tool capable of satisfying everyone.

Bases

We aimed to maintain simplicity in the design, using light tones, ample spacing, a straightforward typography, and a flow filled with familiar patterns. This was done with the goal of ensuring that both users wouldn't feel overwhelmed when using the platform.

Organizer

The organizer's role involved handling more complex workflows, ranging from event creation with multiple steps and inadequate structure to result uploading that resulted in a table with a lot of information that few users could understand.

Parents

In the original design, the parent was the least considered user within the platform, so many things had to be built from scratch. We focused our attention on the event registration flow and the subsequent results view for this purpose.

Before & After

The change is evident at first glance; both dashboards and tables began to have a logical system, aiding in a better understanding of the flows for users. Tasks ceased to be tedious, and a greater number of design rules are now followed. Additionally, the tool appears much cleaner and easier to read in this case.

Website

Being the last thing designed and given less attention by the client, the homepage aimed to display relevant information for both users. It also included various call-to-action elements encouraging users to try out the tool.

Design system

In a project as complex as this one, good organization and a proper handoff of components and guidelines for developers were the keys to success. Therefore, once the project was completed, a process of transferring these elements to a design system was initiated, making it scalable for future stages.

Result

Over the 3-month duration of the project, a significant number of visual and flow-related issues were addressed, resulting in much more legible interfaces. The client concluded the project highly satisfied with the outcome.
