The project

Fotea emerged from conversations with photographers in a community who consistently faced the same problem.

The problem

As a photographer, it's challenging to discover new and interesting locations for photos. Often, inquiries are made to colleagues or family, but the outcome usually leads to the same spaces.

The solution

The idea was to design a collaborative application featuring a map to create and explore new photo locations. This would enable photographers to access a community that could recommend fresh places.

Process

The project underwent a thorough exploration process to understand the market, users, and limitations before advancing to the design phase.

Userflow

Fotea functions as a social network, allowing each user not only to consume recommendations but also to create them for others to see and save.

Users

Understanding the target audience was crucial, and for this, we took the example of a potential photographer and a model.
Cody is a portrait photographer who often captures cityscapes and occasionally needs new inspiration to stay updated in his work. He is tech-savvy and actively engages in social media.

Photographer
Leslie has been a model for 5 years, typically collaborating with brands and knowing all the locations near her studio for photos. However, she occasionally seeks new places as she enjoys experimenting with new photos, often struggling to find them. This leads to frustration and falling back on common locations.

Branding

An elegant image was sought that wouldn't overshadow the photos uploaded by photographers in their respective locations. For this, we opted for monochromatic and subdued tones to highlight the content over the tool.

Design

Designed for all photographers with an elegant and comprehensive outcome.

MVP

The project was divided into several stages, with the first being an MVP limited to 3 basic functionalities: an interactive map, a feature to discover different locations, and the ability to create recommendations.

Interactive map

The map is the main functionality, located on the home screen, allowing users to find locations where they are or in any desired area.

Create recomendation

Being a socially focused tool, user feedback is crucial. Thus, there's a functionality for each person to create their own recommendations with respective information and gallery photos.

Discover

A tool that lets you discover new places within your chosen distance from your location. It shows random sites without relying on the map, and users can click for more information.

Recomendations

Although all functionalities lead to recommendations, each has the ability to read relevant information, view a complete gallery of the place, validate, share, and report it if needed.

Evolution

Visually, this project underwent an internal redesign without modifying functionalities or flow. The project originated from a course that rendered the UI obsolete years later. It transitioned from a clearer and noisier design to a more sober and elegant one.

Testing

To validate all potential issues and improvements the application could have, it was tested with a total of 7 people, divided between photographers and models. The results varied, but most agreed on the following points. Based on these tests, iterations were carried out and reflected in the design.

The map design could be improved.

Locations were not perceived 100% as such. To address this, the map and locations were simplified to leave no room for doubt, while also emphasizing the photo of the place even more.

Potential security issues.

This was a frequent concern; some users feared the possibility of others creating fraudulent locations to intercept and deceive photographers. Initially, the option to report both locations and users was taken, but further functions were being considered to improve it in a new stage.

The concept was well-received.

All 7 potential users agreed that they would use the tool. They were very satisfied with the concept, though with some doubts about certain functionalities that would be addressed in stages beyond the MVP.

Result

The application gained conceptual support from various potential users. Although it did not reach development as it was a concept, a neat, clean, and elegant design was achieved. It fulfills its purpose, and its flows are user-friendly for anyone.
